"Home of Oranges on the Rocks"
Mentone is a small unincorporated town east of Redlands along State Route 138 on the way up to the San Bernardino Mountain communities. Its known as the "Home of Oranges on the Rocks" because of the orange groves in the area and the rocky foothill terrain of Mentone. But the area has another nickname, "Mentone Beach", from a local legend about east coast con men in the 1920's scamming gullible real estate buyers unfamiliar with the area into purchasing beachfront property in "Beautiful Mentone Beach". This writer does not know if this legend is true.
The town of Mentone has just over 10,000 residents and 3,000 households, including standard single family homes, some condos and townhouses, and sometimes a rare manufactured home or duplex. There is some fairly new construction built around 2005 and 2006. The area is popular for residents attracted to the Redlands area that want to avoid higher property values and costs, while still in the same school district and location.
